A unique wedding venue

You are two individuals, and your wedding day should reflect that. Grays Court is extra special and so much more than just a wedding venue, and we certainly don’t believe in one size fits all. From weddings that enjoy exclusive use of the majestic house and beautiful garden for a full day or weekend, to those who prefer a smaller more intimate affair, we will be with you every step of the way.

York's original hidden gem

Dating back to 1080 and nestled in the heart of the exclusive Minster Quarter, Grays Court is a glorious building and has evolved over the centuries, occupied since the first Treasurer to York Minster took residence in 1092. Family-owned since 2005, we have developed into one of York’s premier destinations. In 2018, we won ‘Hotel of the Year’ in the respected Visit York Tourism Awards, and have also been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for our in-house restaurant, The Bow Room.

The Garden

Home to one of the largest private gardens within York, a stunning half-acre of garden bounded by the famous Bar Walls, Grays Court is one of the few city centre hotels permitted to host outdoor ceremonies. In the summer there is nowhere finer to celebrate. In the afternoon sunlight, you may read your vows under the bower of our charming summer-house with trails of wisteria framing the scene.

The Long Gallery

Lined with its original Jacobean oak panelling, The Long Gallery is the unrivalled heart of the house, measuring 90ft in length, holding up to 80 guests, with high double doors leading out to the garden down an elegant sweep of stone steps. To the front, original 17th century windows look over our ancient cobbled courtyard lined with striking London Plane trees, whilst inside the sense of history and graceful surroundings will take your breath away.

The Sterne Room

A classic Georgian drawing room displaying high and beautifully ornate cast ceilings, intricate wooden carving around the doors and a white marble feature replace. The Sterne Room is a spectacular room for a ceremony with charming views of the tree-lined cobbled courtyard to one side, and the garden and famous Bar Walls on the other. Here is a sophisticated option for a more intimate wedding breakfast up to 40 guests seated at round tables.

The Library

An elegant room, marrying cosiness with high ceilings and dramatic floor to ceiling bookshelves. It is a wonderful ceremony space for up to sixteen guests for those that dream of low-key, relaxed vows in front of close friends and family. The Library can also be set up for an intimate wedding breakfast for nine guests.

The Minster room

A perfect option for a wedding breakfast for up to 16 guests seated around one grand table. As the name suggests, the room boasts views over York Minster and the Chapter House. If you time it right, your dinner will be accompanied by the chiming of the Minster bells.

Accommodation

Grays Court is proud to offer 12 luxurious en-suite bedrooms, all located on the second floor and boasting views of either the cobbled tree-lined courtyard, our half-acre of walled garden or York Minster itself. Each room has its own character and style, having been named after notable historical figures with links to the house over the years.

Having only eleven rooms means that you can have your nearest and dearest with you throughout the evening and carry on the celebrations in the morning with the all-important debrief over a hearty cooked-to-order breakfast.
